SUI: What Our Signals Do
What happens when you apply a momentum strategy to one of the youngest assets in our system? You get a strategy that nearly doubles the return of buy-and-hold — but with a Sharpe ratio that says the ride is not smooth.
SUI is a Layer 1 blockchain built by former Meta engineers, launched in May 2023. It targets gaming and DeFi with a Move-based programming model. We added it because it showed the kind of trend-driven price action that MACD is designed to capture — fast directional moves with enough follow-through to trade.
The Backtest: 4h MACD + ADX>40
SUI runs on our 4-hour timeframe with an ADX threshold of 40. That is the highest filter in our system — the same gate we use for PEPE. Only signals where the conviction meter is screaming get through.
Why so aggressive? SUI is noisy. On the daily timeframe, MACD crossovers fire constantly and most of them are garbage — sideways chop that looks like a trend for two days and then reverses. The 4h timeframe catches moves earlier, and ADX>40 filters out everything except the strongest momentum. The combination works: profit factor of 1.64 under Rule A, rising to better results under Rule B.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Timeframe | 4h |
| ADX threshold | >40 |
| Profit factor | 1.64 |
| Mean quarterly alpha | −10.2% |
| Sharpe ratio | −0.16 |
| Signals per year | ~22.8 |
| Strategy return (Rule A) | +70.7% |
| Strategy return (Rule B) | +124.9% |
| Buy-and-hold return | −21.1% |
| Data window | ~3.5 years |
The Honest Read
The strategy beats hold. Rule A turns a −21% hold into a +71% strategy return. Rule B pushes that to +125%. Those are real numbers, and they come from the strategy dodging SUI's uglier drawdowns while staying in for the rallies.
But the mean quarterly alpha is −10.2%, and the Sharpe is −0.16. That means most individual quarters, the strategy underperforms hold. The overall edge comes from a few quarters where the strategy avoids catastrophic declines — the tail events do the heavy lifting. In the quarters where SUI is grinding higher without a sharp selloff, the strategy's entries and exits add friction rather than value.
This is a Tier 2 asset in our system. That means the signal has a positive edge on aggregate, but the consistency is not there yet. Compare to PEPE (Tier 1, positive quarterly alpha) or BTC (Tier 1, long track record). SUI's shorter data window — just 3.5 years — makes the results less certain than assets with 5+ years of history.
What the Signals Are Good At
SUI's biggest single-quarter drawdowns are where the strategy earns its keep. When ADX crosses 40 on a bearish MACD crossover at the 4h level, SUI is usually in the early stages of a real move down. The filter eliminates most of the false bearish signals that would whipsaw you out of a position during sideways markets.
Bullish entries are similarly filtered. When the 4h MACD crosses bullish with ADX>40, SUI tends to follow through for at least several days. These are not micro-scalps — they are trend entries with genuine momentum behind them.
Where They Struggle
Slow grinds. When SUI drifts up 3-4% per week for six weeks straight, ADX never hits 40 and you sit in cash watching the move happen. The filter's strength — ignoring noise — becomes its weakness in low-volatility uptrends.
Also: 3.5 years of data includes exactly one full bull/bear cycle. We do not know how SUI behaves in a prolonged accumulation phase or a multi-year bear. The strategy might look different with two more years of history.
What to Expect
Roughly 23 signals per year — about two per month. That is a moderate pace. You will not be overwhelmed with alerts, but you will not go weeks without one either.
SUI is long-only in our system: buy on bullish crossovers that pass the ADX>40 gate, exit to cash on bearish crossovers. No shorting.

SUI's strategy beats hold by a wide margin, but the negative Sharpe ratio tells you the path is rough. This is a signal that works through big saves in bad quarters, not consistent quarter-over-quarter alpha — and 3.5 years of data means we are still learning how it behaves.
