Litecoin: What Our Signals Do

Here is a puzzle: Litecoin's strategy returned +3,776% over 10 years with a profit factor of 3.74 — and we still classify it as Tier 2. The Sharpe ratio of −0.13 explains why.

Litecoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies, launched in 2011 as a faster, lighter version of Bitcoin. The "digital silver to Bitcoin's gold" narrative has been around for over a decade. We added LTC because it has the longest backtest window of any alt in our system — 10 years of daily data — and because its results teach something important about the difference between total return and risk-adjusted return.

The Backtest: 1D Plain MACD (No ADX)

LTC is the only asset in our system where every ADX configuration hurts performance. We ran the full threshold sweep — ADX>15, >20, >25, >30, >40 — and every single one produced worse results than plain MACD with no filter at all.

This is unusual. Most assets in our system benefit from some level of ADX filtering. LTC does not. The reason appears to be that LTC's trends are slow-building and long-lasting. ADX delays entries into trends that are already profitable by the time they cross any threshold. And LTC's reversals happen fast enough that ADX does not add meaningful exit timing value.

So LTC runs plain MACD on the daily timeframe, augmented only by the SMA-200 filter in validation.

Metric Value
Timeframe 1D
ADX threshold None (ADX=0)
Profit factor 3.74 (plain MACD+SMA200 validation)
Mean quarterly alpha −8.0%
Sharpe ratio −0.13
Strategy return +3,776% (plain MACD+SMA200)
Buy-and-hold return +1,443%
Data window ~10 years
Tier 2

The Paradox: Huge Returns, Negative Sharpe

The strategy returned +3,776% versus buy-and-hold's +1,443%. That is a 2,333-percentage-point gap over 10 years. On raw returns alone, this is one of the best-performing signals in our entire system.

But the mean quarterly alpha is −8.0% and the Sharpe ratio is −0.13. What gives?

The answer is distribution. LTC's strategy gains came in concentrated bursts — a few quarters where the strategy massively outperformed hold by avoiding major crashes. In most quarters, the strategy trailed hold by a modest amount due to entry/exit friction and missed rallies. The total is strongly positive because the winning quarters were enormous, but the typical quarter was slightly negative.

This is why the Sharpe is negative: the returns are lumpy, not consistent. You can make a lot of money over a decade with a −0.13 Sharpe, but the path is psychologically difficult. Most quarters you feel like the strategy is underperforming, with occasional quarters of dramatic outperformance that make up for it.

Ten Years of Data: What It Shows

LTC has the longest track record in our alt-coin system. Ten years covers two full bull/bear cycles (2017, 2021) and multiple mini-cycles. The 3.74 profit factor across that span is robust — it is not an artifact of one lucky year.

Buy-and-hold returned +1,443% — impressive for any asset. But that return came with drawdowns exceeding 90% twice. The strategy returned more than double that while, in theory, sitting in cash during the worst of those drawdowns. The problem is "in theory" — the daily MACD is not fast enough to catch every reversal, and some of the entries and exits happen at suboptimal prices.

Where the Signals Work

LTC's macro trends — the multi-month moves that define crypto cycles — are where the strategy prints money. The 2017 rally from to , the 2021 rally from to , and the crashes that followed each one. MACD crossovers at the daily level catch these moves reasonably well. The SMA-200 filter adds confirmation that the broader trend supports the signal.

Where They Struggle

LTC's micro-trends — the 2-4 week rallies and pullbacks within a larger range — create whipsaws. MACD fires bullish, you enter, and two weeks later it fires bearish at a slightly lower price. This happens repeatedly during LTC's extended sideways periods, which can last 6-12 months. The −8.0% mean quarterly alpha reflects these accumulated small losses during range-bound markets.

Also: LTC's best days may be behind it. The "digital silver" narrative has lost relevance as newer assets have taken mindshare. LTC's future price action may not resemble its past — which means the 10-year backtest, while the longest we have, may overstate the go-forward edge.

What to Expect

LTC generates signals at a moderate pace on the daily timeframe. Long-only: buy on bullish MACD crossovers, exit to cash on bearish. No ADX filter means every crossover counts — expect more signals than ADX-filtered assets, with a higher false-positive rate.

LTC's +3,776% strategy return over 10 years is the largest raw number in our alt-coin system. The negative Sharpe ratio tells you it came in violent bursts separated by long stretches of underperformance. This is a signal for patient traders who can weather quarters of friction in exchange for occasional outsized gains.
